Buskers back on track

Christchurch’s summer street celebration – Bread & Circus – World Buskers Festival – is scheduled to take place from 22 April to 1 May, during the Easter school holidays.

Organising partners, Strut & Fret NZ and ChristchurchNZ, say the event will take place at Victoria Square and The Commons, Covid-19 permitting.

Free to enter, with My Vaccine Passes required at entry, the Bread & Circus site will comprise two big stages with busking and free entertainment, roving performers, food stalls, bars, and activities for the whole whānau. The evenings of both Fridays (22 and 29 April) and Saturdays (23 and 30 April) will offer a late programme, for a more adult audience.

Festival Director Scott Maidment says, “In a troubled world, we all need more time to relax and time to play. At Bread & Circus, we have created a playground for the young, the old and the young at heart. We’re excited to present this unique festival experience and the perfect antidote to our troubled times.”

Loren Heaphy, ChristchurchNZ General Manager Destination and Attraction, says, “Bread & Circus has become one of our city’s favourite events, an annual celebration of talent, vibrancy and diversity. It will bring life to the central city and confirm Ōtautahi Christchurch as a centre for arts and culture.”

This year’s artists include Kozo Kaos, who combines the art of juggling, magic, and circus with comedy, danger and macabre to create a uniquely edgy and unforgettable performance which has sold out at theatres and venues across New Zealand, award-winning comedian magician Jarred Fell who shocked and delighted – in equal measure – audiences in 2021; and New Zealand’s only quick-change artists, duo Mystical Jinx (Josh Hart and Amy Leigh) who perform a very specialised form of illusion which dates back to 16th Century Italy.
